The Cryptic Degrees

You have to take the Mark degree and be a Royal Arch Mason before you can take the degrees of the Cryptic Rite. There are four of them, and they are usually given sequentially in one evening. The degree names are Most Excellent Master, Royal Master, Select Master, and Super-Excellent Master. They are governed by the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters. The degrees claim to explain parts of the Royal Arch that would otherwise be difficult to understand. The degree of Most Excellent Master is not the same degree as the Scottish degree of Excellent Master; in Scotland the degree of Excellent Master is conferred on an English Royal Arch Mason who has not gone through the ceremony of passing the Veils. The passing of the Veils was at one time part of the Royal Arch, but in England is now worked in only Bristol, Yorkshire, Northumberland, and Lancashire.

Ward thinks the passing of the Veils is an important part of the Royal Arch degree, and in most parts of the United States an English Royal Arch Mason is placed in a similar position as he is in Scotland, in that he will not be admitted to a Chapter until he has passed the Veils. The four Veils symbolically represent the Wardens at the Gates in Amenti, and, until you have passed through the super-physical stages they symbolize, you cannot hope to approach the Light at the Centre.

Once you have taken the Cryptic Degrees, you will be well advised to take the Allied Degrees in order to obtain the Red Cross of Babylon.
